Danger- what danger?

According to Maureen Greene, a DePaul Crime Prevention Sergeant, crime rates in the DePaul Community are definitely on the rise. The most common among students during the holiday season was robbery. According to an article on the DePaul website, “A recent spate of burglaries are clearly crimes of opportunity committed against students who have dropped their guard,” says Bob Wachowski, Public Safety Director.

In this day and age, it is not only strangers doing the robbing, but within the school itself. With an average student in the possession of an expensive lab top, an IPod, and mom’s credit card, one thing is for sure-keep an eye on your belongings. The reality is that places on school grounds including the library and the Student Center are open to the public. Students should be more aware of who could be lurking, waiting to make their move. There are safety apparatuses in place to help students combat crime-Safety Alerts are one key defense.

The overall layout of the Safety Alert bulletin was constructed on the suggestions by DePaul students. The postings incllude only important information of an incident- who, where, and when. This provides students with the knowledge of which areas have higher crime rates among others.

With a withering economy it is best to always be aware of ones surrounding!

Cubs pull off an 11th inning stunner

Aramis Ramirez

Thanks to Aramis Ramirez the Cubs, for a second straight day, beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 5. After what seemed like a game with endless errors and missed opportunities, the Cubs pulled through for the home crowd. With two outs, Ramirez hit a 1-0 pitch from Reyes into the left-corner bleachers to win it with his third homer of the season.

The game was somewhat of a walk off. The Cubs and Cardinals issued a combined 15 walks on the afternoon. Neal Cotts took the mound to start the seventh with the Cubs up by a score of 5-4. Cotts walked both batters he faces on eight pitches and unfortunately did not throw a single strike. Lou Piniella replaced Cotts with Carlos Marmol. Marmol retired Rick Ankiel, Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwich to end the inning.

And although Ramirez’s home run stunner was all the hype, overall the win was a team effort. Alfonso Soriano scored a pair of runs. Kosuke Fukudome drove in a run and scored two and Derredk Lee tied the game at five with a 2-out, 2-run double in the fifth.
